What steels are equivalent to A36 steel?

EN standards equivalent to A36 steel(S235JR

Under the European EN standard system, S235JR is the most commonly accepted equivalent to A36 steel. Both steels have similar yield strength levels and are widely used in building structures, bridges, and general steelwork. While S235JR follows EN 10025, its performance in terms of strength and formability closely matches that of A36 steel, making it a frequent substitute in international projects.

JIS standards equivalent to A36 steel(SS400

In the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), SS400 is generally regarded as equivalent to A36 steel. SS400 offers comparable tensile strength and good ductility, and it is widely applied in structural frames, plates, and welded components. In export-oriented fabrication, SS400 and A36 steel are often used interchangeably when design codes allow.

GB standards equivalent to A36 steelQ235B

According to Chinese GB standards, Q235B is the closest equivalent to A36 steel. Q235B has similar yield strength requirements and is extensively used in construction, steel structures, and manufacturing. For projects involving China-based fabrication or material sourcing, Q235B is commonly proposed as an alternative to ASTM A36 steel.

Other international equivalents to A36 steel

In addition to EN, JIS, and GB standards, several other national standards include structural steel grades comparable to A36 steel. Examples include CSA G40.21 300W (Canada) and IS 2062 E250 (India). These steels share similar mechanical performance and are used in comparable structural applications, although certification and code acceptance should always be verified for specific projects.
