FBE coating repair methods


FBE coating (single layer fused epoxy coating) is a kind of high-performance anticorrosive coating with special epoxy powder coating as film forming material, which is widely used in the field of pipeline and structure protection. The coating is composed of solid epoxy resin, curing agent and a variety of additives, which is a thermosetting coating. During construction and use, the FBE coating may be damaged by external forces or environmental influences, and proper repair measures are required to ensure its anti-corrosion properties.


Coating pipes


There are many kinds of damage cases of FBE coating, which can be divided into small area damage and large area damage according to the scope of damage. The following are specific repair methods for different damage ranges:

Repair method of small area damage (≤ 30mm x 30mm)

1. Preparation of epoxy primer
The curing agent and solvent-free epoxy primer are fully mixed in a ratio of 1:2 to ensure that the material is evenly dispersed.

2. Coating construction
Apply the repair material using a stiff brush or short-bristled roller to evenly cover the damaged area.
The coating thickness should be controlled within 400μm to avoid the phenomenon of coating flowing or hanging.

3. Multiple layers
After the first coat dries, a second repair coat is applied.
The coverage of the second coating should be appropriately expanded to enhance the overall protection effect.

Repair methods for large area damage (> 30mm x 30mm) or dense damage points

1. Metal surface treatment
Clean the metal surface of the damaged area to ensure that there is no grease, dirt or loose coating particles.
Use a polishing tool to treat the surface, ensure that the substrate is clean and smooth, wipe with a rag if necessary and confirm dryness with toilet paper, then mark the damage.

2. Environmental requirements
Ensure that the relative humidity of the construction environment is lower than 80% and the temperature is above 5°C.

3. Repair material coating
Apply the mixed epoxy primer evenly to the damaged area to ensure that the coating thickness meets the design standard.
After application, apply a layer of glue evenly to the outer layer to enhance adhesion and sealing.

4. Cold wrap tape for protection
Use cold wrap tape to wrap the repaired area multiple times, ensuring that each circle is tight to the surface and no air remains.
After wrapping is completed, conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure that the tape is not loose, warping and other problems.
Things to pay attention to in the repair process

5. Material compatibility
The repair material needs to match the original coating to avoid degradation due to chemical incompatibility.

6. Construction environment control
The repair area should be kept dry and clean to avoid water vapor and pollutants affecting the adhesion and curing effect of the coating.

7. Cleanliness of construction tools
Before use, ensure that the surface of the construction tool is free of oil, rust or other pollutants to ensure the quality of construction.

8. Control of curing time
After the repair is completed, sufficient curing time should be reserved according to the construction requirements, so that the coating can achieve the ideal mechanical properties and anti-corrosion effect.


Through scientific and standardized repair measures, the protective properties of FBE coatings can be effectively restored, ensuring the long-term safe operation of pipelines and structures, while significantly extending their service life.
