ASTM A179 Carbon steel pipe is a carbon steel pipe manufactured according to ASTM A179 standard. ASTM A179 and ASME SA-179 are two versions of the same standard, the former developed by the American Society for Materials and Testing (ASTM), and the latter adopted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and incorporated into its Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) system. This standard is a seamless cold-drawn low carbon steel pipe standard for heat exchangers and condensers, which specifies the manufacturing process, chemical composition, mechanical properties and tolerance requirements of the steel pipe to ensure that it is suitable for high-precision heat transfer equipment.

Manufacturing process: Cold drawing process to ensure surface finish and dimensional accuracy, suitable for high-pressure environments.

Chemical composition: The use of low carbon steel material, usually low carbon content, generally 0.06-0.18%, to improve weldability and cold working performance. The content of manganese is 0.27-0.63%, the content of phosphorus is 0.035%max, and the content of sulfur is 0.035%max.

Mechanical properties: to meet the tensile strength, yield strength and other indicators. Tensile strength (min) : 325MPa, yield strength (min) : 180MPa, elongation (min) : 35%, hardness (max) : 72HRB. However, steel pipes with an outer diameter of 1/8 inch or wall thickness of less than 0.4 mm may not be applicable to the relevant mechanical requirements.

Outer diameter range: 1/8 inch to 3 inch (3.2 to 76.2 mm), and suitable for smaller specifications of steel pipe (but mechanical
Performance may be limited).

Wall thickness requirements: Minimum wall thickness design, usually no less than 0.015 inches (0.4 mm).

Tolerance standards: Strict dimensional deviation specifications are followed to ensure interchangeability and assembly accuracy. For example, the allowable deviation of the outer diameter, different sizes of the pipe have different positive and negative tolerance values, usually the outer diameter of the pipe below 15.88mm allowed ±0.10mm deviation, more than 15.88mm pipe deviation range may be relaxed to ±0.15mm. The wall thickness tolerance is generally controlled within the range of ±10% of the nominal thickness, but the specific value needs to refer to the classification provisions in the standard table.

Central Steel stocks a full range of A179 seamless carbon steel tubes. The A179 seamless carbon steel tube is particularly suitable for tubular structures requiring a minimum wall thickness design to improve heat transfer efficiency and pressure resistance. In the corrosive environment of hydrogen sulfide, the SA-179 (H2S) version meets the specific needs of the oil, gas and chemical industries.

Special releases and updates

ASME SA-179M: Metric version, co-existing with SA-179 (imperial), suitable for international production needs.
The latest version, ASME SA-179/SA-179M:2021, updates the manufacturing and testing requirements to keep pace with industry technology developments.

Application field

ASTM A179 carbon steel pipe is mainly used in energy, chemical, shipbuilding and refrigeration equipment and other fields. For example, it is used as an industrial pipeline to transport water, gas, oil and chemical media. It can also be used for some mechanisms and assemblies requiring higher strength and good weldability.

Conclusion

ASTM A179 carbon steel tubing is the core material for heat transfer equipment due to its precision manufacturing and pressure resistance. When selecting, pay attention to the standard version, environmental adaptability (such as corrosive media) and dimensional tolerance requirements.
