Pipe Size usually has two kinds of expression way: Nominal Pipe Size (NPS, Nominal Pipe Size) and wall thickness (Schedule, referred to as "Sch.). NPS represents the nominal outer diameter of pipes in inches, while the wall thickness grade is used to indicate the wall thickness of pipes (such as Sch.40, Sch.80, etc.).
Nominal Pipe Size (NPS vs. DN vs. NB)
NPS (Nominal Pipe Size) : Commonly used in North American systems, the nominal size is measured in inches (for example, NPS 2 = 2 inch), and the actual inner diameter is usually smaller than the nominal size (varies depending on the inner diameter).
DN (Diametre Nominal/nominal diameter) : equivalent in European and ISO standards, in millimeters (for example, DN 50 ≈ NPS 2 "). The value is not the actual inner diameter of the pipe, but a code corresponding to an approximate inner diameter, which is convenient for international correspondence.
NB (Nominal Bore/Nominal inner diameter) : Conceptually similar to DN, sometimes NB and NPS can be written interchangeably, but strictly speaking, NB is usually indicated in millimeters and NPS in inches.
Wall thickness specification (Schedule, Sch.)
The indication of wall thickness usually uses "Schedule" or "Sch.", often followed by a number (such as Sch. 40, Sch. 80, etc.). The larger the number, the thicker the wall thickness.
Standards: The size standards for carbon steel and stainless steel tubes mainly follow ASME B36.10M (carbon and alloy steel) and B36.19M (stainless steel tubes). The following is the standard steel pipe size table:
