SCH 40/80 pipe sizes

Date:2025-07-08View:4Tags:sch 40 pipe , sch 80 pipe , pipe size
In pipeline engineering, "schedule" (abbreviated as Sch.) is used to indicate the wall thickness grade of the pipeline. The larger the value, the greater the wall thickness. And  SCH 80 (thickened wall) are the two most commonly used grades. The following provides a detailed explanation from aspects such as definition, features, application scenarios, and common size parameters.

The definition and significance of Schedule

The ANSI/ASME B36.10M standard specifies the nominal diameter (NPS) of carbon steel and alloy steel pipes, as well as the corresponding outer diameter (OD) and wall thickness (WT).

The Schedule value = (wall thickness/nominal diameter) × 1000 (approximate value), which is used to distinguish different wall thickness grades.

Under the same nominal diameter (NPS), the larger the value, the thicker the wall thickness, the stronger the pressure-bearing capacity, but the greater the weight. SCH 40 is the commonly used "standard wall" in industry, and SCH 80 is the common "thickened wall".

The characteristics of SCH 40 and SCH 80

SCH 40: With relatively thin wall thickness and light weight, it is suitable for medium and low-pressure applications and is often used in water supply and drainage systems as well as low-pressure gas pipelines.
SCH 80: It has a relatively thick wall thickness, is heavier in weight, and has a higher cost. It is suitable for medium and high-pressure applications and is often used in fluid transportation, chemical industry, and high-temperature environments.
