Note:
It is stipulated that the allowable variation in the thickness of A36 steel plate is 0.01 inches.
The thickness of the A36 sheet is measured at a distance of 3/8 to 3/4 inches from the longitudinal edge.
Common supply thicknesses
Hot-rolled thin plates: 1.5mm - 6mm;
Medium and heavy plates: 6mm - 50mm;
Thick plate: 50mm - 200mm;
Extra-thick plates (specially rolled/customized) : Up to 300mm or even thicker.
In actual supply and application, ASTM A36 can be subdivided into various types according to differences in thickness, forming methods and processing techniques.
Classified by thickness:
A36 thin Plate : Its thickness is usually less than or equal to 6mm. It can be manufactured by hot rolling and cold rolling. Common forms include hot-rolled coil Sheet (HR Sheet) and cold-rolled coil sheet (CR Sheet). It is mainly used in the manufacturing of automotive bodies, light structural parts, stamping parts, etc.
A36 Medium Plate: With a thickness typically ranging from 6 to 50 mm, it is the most commonly used and most abundant type of steel plate, and is widely applied in fields such as Bridges, mechanical manufacturing, and building structures.
A36 Heavy Plate: With a thickness typically ranging from 50 to 200 mm, it is widely used in large mechanical bases, ships, construction machinery structures, and other fields
A36 Extra Heavy Plate: With a thickness greater than or equal to 200mm (fixed rolling or forged rolling), it is mainly used in offshore platforms, wind power foundations, and supports for large pressure vessels, etc.
Summary
Due to its high cost performance and reliable mechanical properties, A36 steel has long been one of the mainstream materials for engineering projects and is widely adopted in the construction and infrastructure fields, being regarded as a representative of "general-purpose structural steel".
