Type of drill pipe
Drill pipe is an essential tool in oil and gas extraction drilling and comes in different diameters, lengths, grades and configurations to meet specific drilling requirements.
What is drill pipe?
A drill pipe is a long, hollow device that is an important part of the drill string and is used to transmit torque to the bit and circulate drilling fluid. In general, we can divide drill pipe into two types, including standard drill pipe and heavy drill pipe.
The weighted drill pipe is similar to the standard drill pipe, but the weighted drill pipe is heavier than the standard drill pipe, the wall is thicker, is more robust, and has higher torsional strength. It not only reduces the stress between the standard drill pipe and the drill collar, but also provides additional weight and stiffness to the drill string, providing greater stability for the drilling operation. It also reduces the possibility of fatigue failure of drill string under extreme conditions.
Material grade:
The API classifies drill pipe into four grades, including E75, X95, G105, and S135. Grade E steel has the lowest yield strength at 75000psi. With a yield strength of 95,000 psi for Grade X, 105,000 psi for Grade G, and 135,000 psi for Grade S, these are all high strength steels that are suitable for deeper drilling operations and have excellent strength to withstand additional pressure and optimize drilling efficiency.
Length range:
The length of drilling steel is also different, and the length range of drilling pipe is three, including range 1, range 2, and range 3. Range 1:1 drill pipe, 18 to 22 feet long, typically deployed in shallow Wells. Range 2: Standard drill pipe length, 27-30 feet long. Due to its versatility, it is most common in the oilfield industry. Range 3:3 grade steel pipe, 38-45 ft long, for deepwater drilling. Due to its increased length, it is rarely used in drilling operations.
In summary:
The drill pipe is the equipment of the crane in the tower engineering, which carries the dual tasks of conveying power and pipeline tower fluid. According to different drilling needs and underground conditions, select the appropriate drill pipe type and size drilling.
