Common questions about flanges

Flange plays a vital role in pipeline connection, it is an important link connecting valves and pipelines. However, many people will have questions about flanges, what is a flange? How does the flange connect the pipe to the valve? The following are answers to questions about flanges.

Flanges

What is a flange?

Flanges are disk-shaped parts that are most common in pipeline engineering. Flanges are used in pairs, in the pipeline project flanges are mainly used for pipeline connection, in the need to connect the pipeline, the installation of flanges in a variety of ways, low pressure pipes can use wire flange, more than 4 kilograms of pressure is the use of welded flange. Add a sealing point between the two flanges, and then tighten with bolts, different pressure flange thickness is different, the use of bolts are different. When pumps, valves, etc., are connected with pipelines, the parts of these devices are also made into corresponding flange shapes, also known as flange connections. All the connecting parts connected by bolts around the two planes and closed at the same time are generally called "flanges", such as the connection of ventilation pipes, this type of part can be called "flange parts". However, this connection is only a part of the equipment, such as the connection of the flange and the pump, it is not good to call the pump "flange parts". Smaller ones, such as valves, may be called "flanged parts".

How is the flange connected to the pipe?

There are many types of flanges, most flanges are connected with pipelines or valves by welding methods, such as flat welding flanges, plug welding can be used, double-sided welding, butt welding flanges can be directly butt welding. A few flanges are connected directly by bolts and do not require welding, such as threaded flanges, which are directly connected to the pipe through the thread.

What are the uses of flanges?

The main use of flanges is to connect pipes, valves and equipment together to form a complete piping system. Through the use of gaskets, the fluid can also be sealed and isolated to avoid media leakage. It can also be used to connect the import and export pipes of equipment, such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, reactors, etc. It can also be used for pipeline transformation, and the flange provides a convenient interface when the pipeline system needs to add branch pipes, change the flow direction or replace part of the pipe section.

What is the difference between a flange and a valve?

The valve and the faucet are the same thing, or the faucet is a kind of valve, which can be turned on to flow out water or air; Shut it off to stop the water.
The faucet at home is screwed on the pipe, but some pipes used in factories, the water or gas inside, the pressure is very high, with the wire connection is too weak, it is directly welded or connected by other methods. Flange is one of the connection methods.

What problems should be paid attention to when installing flanges?

1, the flange should have sufficient strength, fastening shall not be deformed. The sealing surface of the flange should be smooth and clean, and the oil and rust spots should be carefully cleaned during installation.
2, the gasket should have good oil resistance, anti-aging properties, and should have good elasticity and mechanical strength. When installing, gaskets of different sections and different sizes should be selected according to the shape of the joint, and placed correctly.
3. The fastening force of the flange should be uniform, and the compression of the rubber pad should be controlled at 1/3.
